Introduction

About Stavely School

Nestled in the rural, agricultural heart of Stavely, Alberta, Stavely School is a beacon of high-quality academics and athletic excellence. Our commitment to nurturing leadership and academic achievement sets us apart, and our recent Lighthouse Certification is a testament to the success of our efforts.

Leader in Me: Building Tomorrow's Leaders

Leader in Me is an evidence-based PK-12 model designed in collaboration with educators to foster resilience and leadership in students, create a high-trust culture, and improve academic achievement. This model equips students, educators, and families with the skills needed to thrive, adapt, and contribute in a dynamic world.

Our Lighthouse Journey

Our journey to becoming a Lighthouse School began with a shared vision: to prepare students with the college-, career-, and life-readiness skills essential in today’s fast-paced environment. Through Leader in Me, our students have learned to become self-aware, interdependent, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, and communicate effectively.

Commitment to Academic Excellence

At Stavely School, academic achievement is of paramount importance. We have consistently achieved a 100% acceptable standard in our provincial achievement tests, reflecting our dedication to mastering all learning outcomes. Our rigorous academic programs are designed to challenge and inspire students, ensuring they reach their full potential.

A Safe, Welcoming, and Caring Environment

Our focus on creating a safe, welcoming, and caring environment is integral to our success. We believe that students learn best when they feel supported and valued. Our school culture is built on trust, respect, and a sense of community, where every student is encouraged to thrive.

A Culture of Leadership

Principal Leanne Watson shares, “We are honored to have been certified as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. We have seen amazing results from implementing the Leader in Me model at our school, such as our students proudly showcasing their learning at our annual Celebration of Learning in March, our Leadership Day, and Public Speaking Showcase. Prior to our Leader in Me framework, most of our students were fearful of public speaking, and now they eagerly pick up the mic for school assemblies and formal ceremonies like our Christmas Concert or Remembrance Day Ceremony. This model has significantly impacted all students, and we expect to see even greater results over time.”

Exemplary Standards of Excellence

The Lighthouse Certification is a highly regarded standard attainable by every Leader in Me School. Schools that achieve this certification demonstrate a strong leadership model and significant measurable results aligned with their goals. Franklin Covey Education's Lighthouse Rubric sets high standards for quality and school outcomes, measuring success in teaching leadership principles, creating a leadership culture, and aligning academic systems.

Recognition and Impact

Sean Covey, President of Franklin Covey Education, expressed, “We are thrilled to recognize Stavely School as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. Schools who achieve this Lighthouse Certification exemplify a strong leadership model and what it means to be a Leader in Me school. This school has experienced incredible results by implementing the principles and practices related to Leader in Me, and we are honored to celebrate their success.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Since its official launch, more than 7,000 schools across over 70 countries have adopted the Leader in Me model, with over 700 achieving the prestigious Lighthouse Certification. Stavely School now joins this elite group, committed to ongoing learning, developing as leaders, and fostering a culture of leadership that permeates our school community.

Population

The Town of Stavely is a thriving town of approximately 500 residents and growing.  Located between Lethbridge and Calgary, an hours drive from either on Hwy 2, Stavely is surrounded by ideal ranching and farming areas.  Rolling prairies to the east and foothills to the west include camping areas, fishing and hiking trails.  Newcomers to the town and area will welcome the openness, friendliness and community spirit that the residents of Stavely pride themselves on

The Town of Stavely was named for Alexander Staveley Hill, Managing Director of the Oxley Ranching Company that was formed in 1882.  With the influx of settlers, the bow-car stop and tent-town, we progressed to the status of a village in 1903 and to a town in 1912.

Principal

Ms. Leanne Watson is a long-time and very proud Stavely resident. Her very first teaching position was in A. J. Nowicki School in Stavely, AB teaching the grade 8/9 class. Leanne enjoyed teaching in Stavely so much that she moved here and continued her teaching career in Livingstone Range School Division.

Leanne's two daughters, Ella and Hannah, also attended Stavely School, loving their learning and life experiences here. Although Ella and Hannah have moved post-secondary and high school (respectively), they regularly come back to help out with extra-curricular events.

Leanne completed her Masters in Education in the area of Curriculum and Assessment and uses this knowledge to facilitate PD whenever possible for staff. It is Leanne's goal as an administrator to provide a framework to facilitate the growth of the engaged, ethical and entrepreneurial student.  By infusing the framework of the school with a culture of care, students are more likely to delve into the competencies, ranging from critical thinking to personal growth and well-being, all of which will improve achievement results.  Students’ passion for learning increases when they feel a sense of belonging and connection to the school as well as to the targeted construct. By providing sound instructional leadership through professional development and collaboration, administration, teachers and students will create a system rich in learning resulting in improved achievement.

Mission

Where every student shines.

Vision

It is important to educate students in their own community. We value and respect individual differences. We want our children to receive a 21st century education that prepares them to be responsible global citizens. School must be a warm inviting learning environment where the whole child is nurtured to be the best that they can be. The school is a focal point in the community. We value integrity and honest-open communication. Parents are an integral component to education. We believe that celebration of success is important.
